MHW 2004

News on Men’s Health in Denmark

The interest around men’s health in Denmark is very new but is growing rapidly:

  • In 2002 there was the first Danish participation with presentations at 2 nd World Congress on Men’s Health.
  • In 2003 two conferences on men’s health was held. One in Copenhagen at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet sponsored by The Ministry for Gender Equality and opened by the minister http://www.univie.ac.at/wcmh/website/pdf/IMHW2003_Denmark.pdf.
  • The other was held at University of Southern Denmark, The Faculty of Health Sciences. Both conferences took place in ‘International Men’s Health Week’. TV, radio and newspapers reported intensely on the events.
  • In 2003 a Society for Men's Health Denmark was formed http://www.sundmand.dk.
  • At the end of 2003 a Nordic network for men’s health was founded under Nordic Institute for Women' Studies and Gender Research, an interdisciplinary Nordic research institution financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers. There are 30 participants from Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden in the network.
  • In January 2004 the Ministry for Gender Equality declared that men’s health is one of the ministry’s priorities for this year.
  • In January 2004 representatives of Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, the Ministry for Gender Equality, the National Health Board of Denmark, and the University of Southern Denmark formed a ginger group for initiatives in Denmark during the International Men’s Health Week 2004.
  • The agenda for Men’s Health Week 2004 in Demark is as follows:
    • Tuesday 15 th there is an opening convention headed by the Chief Medical Officer Jens Kristian Gøtrik of The Danish Health Board. Other speakers will be Alan White, UK, the “TV-doctor” from Danish Broadcasting Corporation, and representatives from the Ministry for Gender Equality, National Institute Public Health, and Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet. A leaflet on men’s health produced by the National Health Board will be presented.
    • Wednesday 16 th there will be Men’s Health activities at the Town Hall Square of Copenhagen in collaboration with The Health and Care Committee of the City Council of Copenhagen. There will be free health check-ups for men, and activities focussing on young men’s risk-taking behaviour, men and healthy food, men and physical condition, and male sexual health.
    • Thursday 17 th The Ministry for Gender Equality will award a prize to a person who has been active in working with men in crisis.
    • Saturday 19 th to Sunday 20 th the first Danish scientific Conference on Men’s Health takes place at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet. Among the keynote speakers are: Ian Banks, MD, President of European Men’s Health Forum, andWolfgang Rutz, MD PhD, Uppsala Academic Hospital; former WHO, Regional Office for Europe. New Danish, Norwegian and Swedish research on men’s health will be presented.

During Men’s Health Week 2004 in Denmark there will be radio and TV programmes taking up the questions on Men’s Health.
